Missionary Margaret Jones made it clear, “What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes (James 4:14). Life is short. Consequently, a disciple of Christ needs to have good priorities in order to accomplish his God-given purpose.”
Margaret invited the congregation to come to the altar and evaluate their priorities. I responded and knelt in prayer, quietly contemplating my priorities in light of the brevity of life. It was time for a reality check. I could only think of two priorities that I had established that year as a high school graduate.
The priorities thrusting me into the future were, “A good job and a red, Oldsmobile convertible.” In two weeks, my older brother and I were to begin training at a telegraphic school in Pueblo, Colorado for employment with the railway. Kneeling in His presence, I knew my priorities did not reflect God’s design for my life.
The next three days while plowing a harvested wheat field, my heart reached out to God. I began to realize the Lord had a plan for my life; a divine destiny. It became evident I needed time, thought and prayer to establish His priorities for my life.
Wednesday evening our family drove 45 minutes to our home church in Topeka, Kansas – First Assembly of God. I met Pastor Utley before the service and announced, “I want to go to Bible school and find out what God wants me to do with my life.”
Two weeks later I arrived on campus at Central Bible College, Springfield, Missouri to seek God's sovereign plan for the future.
The reality check had come just in time; God’s timing was perfect!
